Chris Whitley and Jeff Lang - Dislocation Blues]
DISLOCATION BLUES was recorded in Australia in 2005 by American blues-rock singer and guitarist Chris Whitley and Australian singer-songwriter Jeff Lang. It was Whitley's last recording session before his death from cancer later that year. Although never officially completed, the songs on DISLOCATION BLUES are no mere demos. With a live-in-the-studio immediacy that works in favor of the tunes' ragged charms, these 13 songs are uniformly impressive.
Blues standards like "Stagger Lee," a pair of Bob Dylan covers ("When I Paint My Masterpiece" and "Changing of the Guard"), and a large handful of Whitley originals ("Velocity Girl," for one) combine to create an intimate portrait of two kindred spirits working closely together, unknowingly for the last time. cduniverse.com
Christopher Becker Whitley (August 31, 1960 – November 20, 2005) was an iconic American singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Highly acclaimed by critics, Whitley achieved modest mainstream success, but had a devoted following. Whitley's style was rooted primarily in blues, but drew on an array of influences. In 2001, the New York Times called him "restless ...evoking Chet Baker and Sonic Youth as much as Robert Johnson"...
Whitley played a brand of confessional acoustic and electric blues, mixed with modern rock. His lyrics often contained overt sexual references and sometimes bordered on the surreal. An avid fan of jazz legend John Coltrane, Whitley played the National / Dobro, made famous by many of the great Mississippi delta blues players of the 1930s. Whitley also appeared in the concert film documentary Hellhounds on my Trail - The Afterlife of Robert Johnson, with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green, jam band Gov't Mule, and blues guitarist Keb' Mo.
Because of his unique style of playing, he used many alternate tunings for his guitars.
Whitley has also recorded with Shawn Colvin, Cassandra Wilson, Rob Wasserman, Little Jimmy Scott, Mike Watt, Johnny Society, Joe Henry, Michael Shrieve, Chocolate Genius, DJ Logic, Ely Guerra, Goat, Dave Pirner (of Soul Asylum), Clint Mansell and Jeff Lang...
Singer-songwriter Jeff Lang has built up a reputation for startlingly original performances, working without a set list, allowing the unique energy of each night to shape the songs. While Lang will talk of his admiration for the elemental blues of Skip James, the raw gospel of Blind Willie Johnson, the devastating guitar work of Jimi Hendrix, the masterful slide guitar of Ry Cooder, and the sublime songwriting of Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson, comparisons to these artists fails to paint an adequate picture.
Jeff Lang is critically acclaimed as a truly great guitar player. The unusual thing is that the guitar playing never gets in the way of the music, nor overshadows his gift for hauntingly poetic songwriting. As a live performer Lang is only satisfied when something truly inspired takes place. This restless striving for the sublime pays great dividends for audiences that join him for the ride...
